A financial advisor is an expensive resource who is also fallable. Thus there is a constant drive to find a technological solution which will drive down costs and ensure compliance with the ever increasing burden of financial regulation.
It is difficult for a computer to read your mind, assess your mood and watch for all those non verbal clues, so the human interface still does have a place even if a little machine assistance wouldn't go amiss.

There are several products on the market running on laptops that assist a qualified investment advisor in helping his client to select his/her portfolio of investments. And of course some clients write their own software or heavily modify an off the shelf product. These products follow a process which eventually leads to products from the sellers portfolio of products whether it be their own products or a portfolio based on a panel of providers. The needs analysis, risk assessment, investment strategy leads to product sales in a compliant manner.
